Predicative Speech

The Predicative Speech cognitive function handles sequential logic (if this, then that), crucial for grasping how words and numbers link together in sentences and procedures. It also plays a role in using internal speech to direct our actions.

Predicative Speech is Involved in:

Picture
using internal dialogue to actively rehearse and retain information

Picture
learning steps in procedures in things like mathematics and science

Picture
using internal dialogue to rehearse actions prior to taking action - as a way to guide one's behaviour

Picture
being able to put information into one's own words

Picture
understanding and using correct syntax (the order and organisation of words in a sentence) to express ideas clearly

Picture
understanding the meanings of words and how they are used in sentences which supports the learning of vocabulary

Signs of a Difficulty in this Cognitive Funtion

Picture
difficulty speaking and writing in complete, grammatically correct sentences - resulting in awkwardness in expression

Picture
frequent misuse of prepositions

Picture
struggle to restate information in own words

Picture
finds it hard to learn vocabulary from context

Picture
problem using inner speech to recode and retain information

Picture
difficulty learning the steps in maths problems

Picture
may come across as lacking foresight, e.g jumping into action before working out the necessary sequence of steps. This occurs because there is a problem with sequential logic and with rehearsing information using internal speech prior to acting

Our Brain's Sequencer

The way we arrange language—both internally and externally—communicates meaning and intention. Consider the nuances in language and intent with these examples:

- He said, “I love you.”
- Only he said, “I love you.”
- He only said, “I love you.”
- He said, “Only I love you.”
- He said, “I love only you.”
- He said, “I love you only.”

This cognitive skill evolves as we grow. For instance, to say “me gone bed” is normal in early childhood. As we reach key developmental stages, we are expected to grasp and use more complex sentences, enhancing both our receptive and expressive language skills. Predicative speech, therefore, plays a crucial role in our overall capacity to understand and be understood.
